Bellator 292 saw Benson Henderson retire after losing Umsan Nurmagomedov.
The main event of Bellator 292 saw lightweight champion Usman Nurmagodmedov taking on MMA icon Benson Henderson in the opening round of the Bellator Lightweight Grand Prix. At 39 years old, this will likely be Henderson's last shot at the Bellator lightweight title, and he had a huge opening task against the Dagestani native.
The first round opended up with a huge kick from Nurmagomedov to Henderson, knocking the man called Bendo to the mat. Nurmagomedov tried to follow up, but Henderson was able to survive several submission attempts, despite dealing with the affect effects of the kick.
Despite Henderson fending off several attempts, Nurmagomedov was able to lock in a rare naked choke, and crank the neck of Henderson, causing the former WEC and UFC champ to tap out under pressure.
Usman Nurmagomedov is set to be a force in the Bellator Lightweight Grand Prix
The win by Nurmagomedov has helped solidify him as the favorite to win the Grand Prix. With the talent in the tournament, nothing is guaranteed, but there won't be one fighter who enters the Bellator cage against Nurmagomedov as the odds-on favorite to win.
As for Henderson, he would lay down his gloves for the last time, retiring after the loss to Nurmagomedov, closing out an iconic career for the lightweight legend.
