Mackenzie Dern may not have gotten a finish of Angela Hill, but she came super close at several points, winning the UFC Vegas 73 main event in what may have been Dern's best Octagon showing to date.
Mackenzie Dern looked to be on another level against Angela Hill, and the UFC's women's strawweight division better watch their backs.
What some thought would have been a competitive fight ended up with Dern, who came into this fight ranked No. 8 in the division, scoring a dominant victory over Hill, ranked No. 14, in the main event of UFC Vegas 73.
Dern also became a third-degree black belt as a result of her one-sided win.
Dern came out aggressive as the two battled in the clinch along the fence early, with Hill landing some noteworthy knees. Dern landed some solid shots and managed to hip toss Hill — only for the momentum to result in Hill on top.

Dern got out of Hill's grasp and managed to drop Hill with a right hand. Dern stayed in control on the ground for the remainder of the round, looking for submissions and landing nasty elbows while in mount. Dern nearly got an armbar locked in before the first round's conclusion.
Dern's striking was strong to start again in the second. Hill, however, managed to clinch up in the first minute of round two, with the fight mostly fought in the clinch at this point. Hill landed more shots, but Dern landed the crisper shots.
A knee from Hill forced Dern to the ground in round three, but Dern quickly countered by threatening a triangle choke and an armbar. Dern then wobbled Hill with a knee, but again hip tossed too much that Hill ended up on top. Dern, however, got out and got Hill back down, threatening to finish once again. Dern delivered brutal ground-and-pound but, just like round one, Hill barely survived a nearly-deep armbar attempt.
Dern again started the fourth round with a flurry of strikes before a clinch battle. Some trading in and out of the clinch. A roll by Dern saw her on top of Hill late in the fourth, and while Hill attempted an arm-triangle, it was no use.
The fifth round opened like the first and third — a flurry from Dern — before Dern successfully used a headlock takedown on Hill near the cage. Dern completely dominated there and nearly scored a finish at several points again before the final bell.
Dern didn't sweep every round, but a couple of 10-8 rounds led Dern to win with a 49-43 and two 49-44 scorecards.
Dern called out Rose Namajunas and Yan Xiaonan after the fight.
