It's been a year of returns for the UFC in 2023 and UFC 289 is no exception. For the first time since 2019, MMA's leading promotion returns to Vancouver, Canada for a massive pay-per-view card. Live from the Rogers Arena on Saturday, June 10, UFC 289 promises to not only showcase Canadian talent but display some top quality clashes throughout.
The main event sees the greatest female fighter of all time, UFC featherweight and bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes (22-5) put her 135-pound title on the line against the surging Irene Aldana (14-6).
We were meant to get a trilogy fight between Nunes and Juliana Peña before Peña was sidelined with an injury. Thankfully for UFC fans, the main event was not scrapped and it was changed to a fight many thought needed to happen before we saw the Nunes-Peña trilogy fight anyways.
The co-main event sees the return of former lightweight champion Charles Oliveira (33-9) take on Beneil Dariush (22-4-1), with the winner surely awarded a shot at the lightweight title. With five Canadians competing across the 11 scheduled bout, expect the crowd to be lively from the get go in what is sure to be an enormous pay-per-view event.
