Boxing Fourth of July: Is there a boxing fight on July 4th weekend?
One of the most significant weekends in sports and for the United States, in general, is upon us as the Independence Day holiday is now here. For the sport of boxing, the 4th of July has had its share of memorable bouts, especially in the heavyweight division.
Over a century ago, on the Fourth of July in 1919, heavyweight champion Jack Dempsey put forth one of the most famous beatdowns in boxing history when he stopped Jess Willard in three rounds. Dempsey would score seven knockdowns in the first round before the stoppage.
Luckily for heavyweight boxing fans, there will be some action in the division this weekend. On July 1, Up-and-coming heavyweight Jared “Big Baby” Anderson will be stepping up in competition to take on former heavyweight titleholder Charles Martin. Anderson has delivered nothing but knockouts thus far, and with Martin being a heavy puncher as well, it should provide some fireworks.
Across the Atlantic in the United Kingdom on July 1, women’s undisputed super middleweight champion Franchon Crews Dezurn will defend her titles against Savannah Marshall. The 2016 Oympian is best known for being the only person to hold a victory over Claressa Shields as an amateur or professional. But when Marshall met Shields in her previous encounter, she lost by unanimous decision. Dezurn will be in the most challenging contest thus far of her career.
Will there be any boxing matches on Fourth of July 2023?
On the day itself, July 4, there won’t be any fights taking place, likely due to the holiday being on a Tuesday.
However, the remainder of July will be jam-packed with bouts, some of which will be the biggest of the entire year.
Next weekend, July 8, welterweight contender Vergil Ortiz Jr will make his long-awaited return to the ring against Eimantas Stanionis in a battle of undefeated fighters for a version of the WBA welterweight crown.
A few weeks later, one of boxing’s pound-for-pound stars, Naoya “The Monster” Inoue, will be moving up to super bantamweight to challenge unified champion Stephen Fulton on July 25. The match will take place in Japan, and for many, this super bantamweight style clash has the potential to be the best of the year.
Just a few days later, on July 29, unquestionably, the most anticipated fight of 2023 will take place when Terence Crawford and Errol Spence Jr finally face off for welterweight supremacy in Las Vegas. It’s been years in the making and almost reached its expiration date as far as fan interest, but in the ring and at the box office, it should garner mainstream attention.
