Mexico has quickly become a well-respected nation in MMA. The 2023 International Fight Week festivities were proof as Mexican flags were visible throughout the week at the various events.
Mexico's popularity has skyrocketed over the last few years, with several fighters from the nation putting on stellar performances. Some of the fighters have gone on to become champions whilst others are just putting the work in and building up incredible resumes along the way.
Amongst the pack, there are several fighters who just stand out. Here are the top five Mexican-born fighters in the world right now.
5. Polo Reyes
Polo Reyes was born in Mexicali, Baja California and has been a mixed martial artist professional since 2009. Prior to becoming a fighter, Reyes was a carpenter before enrolling in some self-defense classes, which ultimately led him to MMA training and competition.
On the Mexican regional scene, Reyes was once the national champion, in addition to holding two regional titles within the country. He also has a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and has experience in the featherweight, lightweight and welterweight divisions.
'El Toro' came into the mainstream eye in 2015 when he joined The Ultimate Fighter: Latin America 2 under Efrain Escudero's team. With one win and one loss on the show, Reyes signed with the UFC in late 2015 and began competing for the promotion regularly.
Reyes was fast-rising in the UFC racking up several wins. Reyes would trade wins and losses in the coming years but, following a string of losses, he would part ways with the UFC. Since then, 'El Toro' has been fighting elsewhere with his most recent showing being at BTC 20: Night of Champions II.
Reyes has a 10-9 record, which he still continues to build up by keeping active. His experience and perseverance makes Polo Reyes one of the best Mexican fighters there is right now.
