UFC 291: Bobby Green chokes Tony Ferguson out cold (VIDEO)

Bobby Green defeated Tony Ferguson via submission (arm triangle choke), Round 3 - 4:54 at UFC 291 on Saturday, July 29, 2023, live from the Delta Center in Salt Lake City, UT.

"I've got a new black belt. This man right here is teaching me everything. He is incredible... Jeremy Horn are you out here, I just want to thank you for helping this poor black kid and giving him a path. He said what happens when your speed and reactions leave. They still haven't left yet," said Green.

Green caught Ferguson with a fast right hand to open the round. The two fighters traded punches from unusual angles and positions. Ferguson went for a takedown but Green was able to defend it. Green landed a two-punch combination but Ferguson responded with a big right that dropped Green.

An inadvertant eye poke from Green stopped the fight. The referee brought the doctor in to look at Ferguson's eye and allowed him to continue. Green landed a fast two-punch combo as he started to pick Ferguson apart with his speed.

Ferguson opened the round by going for a takedown but Green was able to defend. The fight eventually moved to the ground with Green getting an advantageous position. Green reigned down strikes as Ferguson attempted to go for a triangle but didn't come close to getting it. Green started landing some heavy elbows and hammerfists.

Ferguson eventually escaped and got back to his feet. Green used his speed advantage to pick apart Ferguson. With seconds remaining, Ferguson landed a combination.

Ferguson's face was swollen and bloody as the fighters returned for the third round. Green landed another right to open the round. Ferguson landed a strong leg kick but Green landed a counter. Ferguson continued to push forward but Green just hammered him with a strike whenever he got in range.

The two fighters continued to trade strikes, with Green winning the majority of exchanges. Ferguson continued to apply pressure and landed some big shots as he knew he had to score a knockout if he was going to win the fight. The fight went to the ground with Green landing a violent strike. Green transitioned to an arm-triangle choke and choked out Ferguson, who refused to tap.

Ferguson entered UFC 291 in search of his first victory in more than four years. The former interim lightweight champion lost his last five fights against some of the top contenders at lightweight. In his last fight, Ferguson was submitted by Nate Diaz in the main event of UFC 279. Following his sixth straight loss, Ferguson has to consider retiring. At 39-years-old, Ferguson needs to think about his long-term health.

Green has been a member of the UFC roster for more than a decade. After starting his career 23-5, Green has had very mixed results. Over his previous 17 fights, Green has gone 6-9 with one draw and one no-contest.
