UFC 287: Gilbert Burns vs. Jorge Masvidal play-by-play
They touched gloves to start the fight, showing respect to one another.
ROUND 1
The first round started off slowly with both fighters measuring their opponent, unwilling to make a hasty decision that could cost them the fight early. But as the fight continued they exchanged leg kicks and some flurries as the final minute wrapped up but there was less action than fans expected in the first five minutes which ended in a takedown for Burns.
ROUND 2
The second round began and Burns knocked Masvidal briefly and then slammed him to the canvas giving the crowd the action they were eager for in round one. But when the fight stayed on the ground too long the crowd began getting restless and started to boo. Despite Burns maintaining control, he didn't inflict much damage and Masvidal worked up to his feet again.
Burns dragged him back to the canvas again, much to the dismay of the Miami crowd. In the final minutes of the round Masvidal got back to his feet but the round was clearly a win for Burns.
ROUND 3
Some felt that the first round was close and if Masvidal was able to secure round three, he might win on the scorecards but Burns had other plans.
Burns landed huge shot after shot, mostly unanswered and backed Masvidal against the fence, smelling blood. Masvidal, seemingly unphased egged Burns closer with two minutes remaining. After eating a strike from Masvidal, he shoots and gets the takedown with just under a minute left in the fight.
