MMA Twitter mocks Conor McGregor after he calls for law reform in Ireland
By Amy Kaplan
Former UFC double champion Conor McGregor took to Twitter to voice his displeasure over the justice system in Ireland. Over the course of several tweets, he shared stories of crimes that went unfairly punished (in his eyes) and suggested Ireland leave the European Union.
First, he shared a news article that reported an 18-year-old was given just seven years for raping a 10 year-old boy, filming it, and trying to distribute it.
"Despicable! A reform of our justice system and how we punish crime is needed NOW!" he tweeted. "7 years for this? Are you kidding me? Sickness! This is SICK! Life without parole is the minimum here. Death penalty the ideal, and least costly on the state. Who has the power to change this?"
After that, he shared another news story which three men were sentanced to 15 years in prison after attacking a man in what was described as "calculated cruelty."
"This is just flabbergasting! Enough! What would be the process to change our system here?" he tweeted. "President? Taoiseach? Who makes something like this happen? The system is ridiculous at present. I think every single sane Irish mind is in agreement here."
In another tweet he used a waving goodbye emoji after retweeting a fan suggesting Ireland depart from the European Union.
Fans point out the irony in Conor McGregor preaching about justice reform
These thoughts have raised some eyebrows amongst MMA fans who were quick to point out how many of his alleged crimes have also gone unpunished.
McGregor was accused of raping a woman in Ireland IN 2018, according to an in-depth report by the NY Times. Due to the laws in Ireland, we was not named as the accused until the woman sued him in court.
Earlier this year he was accused of raping a woman in the bathroom at the NBA Finals. Another woman accused McGregor of assault after she jumped off his yacht and was rescued by the Coast Guard.
McGregor has been given no punishments for any of these alleged incidents.
