'McGregor Forever' episode 1 full recap
The first episode starts with McGregor discussing his latest foot injury. The most revealing part is when he does admit that he contemplated retirement based on the gravity of the injury.
"It's McGregor forever, and don't you forget it," he says to open the documentary from his hospital room.
The premise of the pilot episode is all about his intense rivalry with Nurmagomedov. It retells the story between McGregor's former teammate, Artem Lobov, and his scrap with Nurmagomedov that began the rift between both teams.
All MMA fans are well aware of what happens next. A McGregor thrown dolly later and the former double champion was charged in court for three accounts of assault among many other charges. This pushed McGregor into a corner of darkness, hence the title of 'Bad Blood' for the inaugural episode.
The whole training camp leading up to his gargantuan fight with Nurmagomedov, McGregor's team keeps stating that they've never seen him in such a dark place mentally. You can feel the tension from the screen whenever McGregor is sparring, seemingly wanting to seriously hurt his training partners by visualizing Nurmagomedov in front of him.
We finally get an answer to his 'ballon foot' allegations when he breaks his toes during training but does not want to stop for a second, asking his trainers to put the toes back in place. All this lead up culminates with the main event of UFC 229.
The most revealing part of the first episode is once McGregor lost to Nurmagomedov. He doesn't care at all about the post-fight scuffle or that he was sucker punched by his opponent's teammates. All that is on his mind is the humiliating loss he just suffered and we get to see a raw, sad side of McGregor you would normally never get without the backstage access.
He shows how much MMA still means to him and how he wants to leave a legacy that cannot be questioned. The former champion is then shown completing his community service, where he has to help clean up a church.
McGregor finds peace at the establishment with the quotes surrounding the church about hope, never giving up, and accepting fate. As McGregor's head clears itself from all the negative energy from his last fight, he prepares to go once again into the Octagon, with plans to make 2020 his most active year to date.
A good but not extremely revealing pilot, it certainly makes you want to click the 'next episode' button to see how and when McGregor returned to being himself, and if we're going to get very exclusive takes from the limited series.
