5 UFC fighters with the best Jiu-Jitsu, and 1 with the worst
5. Gillian Robertson
Gillian Robertson is an interesting name to add to this list, but not one that comes off the page when asking casual fans about Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in the UFC. But those that know both MMA and BJJ recognize that Robertson is crafty with her game. And even those fans that may not be in the know can recognize Robertson’s skills as she holds the record for the most submission wins of all the women to ever compete in the UFC.
Robertson’s skills in Jiu-Jitsu show in her record. She has nine victories via submission in her twenty-match career. Seven of those submissions occurred in the Octagon, with some of those wins coming over the likes of Emily Whitmire, Cortney Casey, Priscila Cachoeira, Mariya Agapova, and others. Robertson has shown the ability to get to key positions like the back mount, which shows in the fact that she’s picked up the majority of her submissions via rear-naked choke.
Robertson hasn’t broken through to the top of either the strawweight or flyweight divisions, but she’s consistently shown that she is one of the best grapplers in either weight class. Look back to her match at Fury Pro Grappling 6, where Robertson needed only 65 seconds to secure a submission victory over former UFC champion, Rose Namajunas by, of course, rear-naked choke. She’s also defeated other members of the fight community on the grappling circuit, like Pearl Gonzalez and Katlyn Chookagain.
Gillian Robertson doesn’t have the accolades across major tournaments, nor the UFC championships on her resume, but her abilities continue to shine through with win after submission win. She’s a threat to anyone who hits the ground with her and continues to rack up finishes during her UFC tenure.
