Joanna Jedrzejczyk vs. Rose Namajunas 2 | UFC 223

Joanna Jedrzejczyk looked unbeatable for so long. She was exciting and had a level of skill that had yet to be seen in the UFC women’s divisions. At the same time, there was always a chance that Rose Namajunas would make her way back to the top after losing the inaugural title fight to Carla Esparza. 

The Ultimate Fighter played a huge role in not only getting new fighters exposure but also created some hype for the newly-formed strawweight division. Popular names like Angela Hill, Randa Markos, Tecia Torres, Joanne Calderwood, and Felice Herrig were all a part of the TUF tournament. Once the dust settled, there has been a clear Mount Rushmore at the top of the UFC strawweight division and it started with Jedrzejczyk. After dominating Esparza, Jedrzejczyk would go on to defend the title a whopping five times before meeting Namajunas. In their first fight, Namajunas won via strikes in the first round. It was the performance of her career and earned her the title she once fought for on the Ulimate Fighter.

After the first fight, there was certainly a level of shock in the MMA community. In fact, many believed that Jedrzejczyk had an off day and would regain the title. In unprecedented fashion, Jedrzejczyk got an immediate rematch just five months later. Jedrzejczyk and Namajunas danced for five rounds and put on a show. Namajunas would go on to win the rematch, which culminated in a new era for the UFC strawweight division.
