UFC 280: Charles Oliveira vs. Islam Makhachev live results and highlights.
The UFC lightweight championship will be vacant no more come UFC 280, as former champion Charles Oliveira and Islam Makhachev will do battle over the division crown in the main event of the Abu Dhabi card.
Oliveira enters this title bout on an 11-fight win streak — with all but one of those bouts ending in a finish — and looking to become a two-time champion.
Oliveira originally claimed the title with a second-round finish of Michael Chandler at UFC 262 and retained it against Dustin Poirier at UFC 269. While Oliveira submitted Justin Gaethje at UFC 274 in May, it was there that he weighed in a half-pound over the 155-pound limit, losing his championship on the scales.
Makhachev comes into this contest on a 10-fight win streak and with just a single loss to his name. The protege to retired undefeated lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, Makhachev’s run over the past 18 months has seen him submit Drew Dober, Thiago Moises and Dan Hooker, as well as earn a first-round TKO of Bobby Green.
A second title fight will take place in the co-main event, as Aljamain Sterling defends the UFC bantamweight championship against former two-time champ TJ Dillashaw.
Sterling, who has won seven consecutive bouts, became the first fighter in UFC history to win a championship on a DQ when he defeated Petr Yan at UFC 259. He retained the title in a rematch with Yan earlier this year at UFC 273.
This will mark Dillashaw’s first fight since his July 2021 split-decision win over Cory Sandhagen. That marked Dillashaw’s first bout after serving a two-year suspension for testing positive for EPO — an incident that resulted in him getting stripped of the bantamweight title.
Dillashaw originally won the UFC bantamweight title in one of the biggest upsets in MMA history, defeating Renan Barao at UFC 173. He’d retain the title against Joe Soto and Barao before dropping it in a close January 2016 decision to Dominick Cruz.
Dillashaw regained the title at UFC 217 by stopping then-unbeaten Cody Garbrandt, who he also beat in a rematch before getting stopped by Henry Cejudo in an attempt to earn champ-champ status with the flyweight title on the line.
Yan will also be featured on the UFC 280 card, taking on Sean O’Malley, whose bout with Pedro Munhoz at UFC 276 earlier this year went to a no-contest due to an accidental eye poke.
