Leon Edwards is not buying into Kamaru Usman’s dream of a boxing crossover.

Leon Edwards is getting ready to take on Kamaru Usman for the UFC welterweight title on Saturday night. The two will square off in the main event of UFC 278 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Edwards has been looking forward to this title shot for a long time, but he feels that the champ may have his head elsewhere.

In recent months Usman has been talking about different ventures in fighting that he would like to pursue. he spoke about a possible move up in weight to try his hand at the light heavyweight belt and has also discussed a desire to box. Usman has been wanting the opportunity to engage in a boxing match with boxing champ, Canelo Alvarez. He believes that the fight would make Usman a lot of money and give him prestige in combat sports.

While Edwards thinks Usman is distracted with his dream of boxing Alvarez, he also thinks it is a pipedream. He spoke about this at the UFC 278 media day.

“I know I can’t beat Canelo in a boxing match, I’m not deluded,” Edwards said at UFC 278 media day. “This guy’s deluded. He cannot beat Canelo. I know it’s a payday for him but boxing-for-boxing, he cannot beat Canelo. MMA? Yeah, he will win. Same, MMA, I beat Canelo. For a pure boxing match in the square, he would probably win.”

Usman’s desire to box has been shot down on multiple occasions by Dana White. Several UFC fighters have been wanting to try to make the big money by taking boxing matches but they may not do so while under a UFC contract. Meanwhile, Usman has a tough task ahead of him already in Edwards, who is riding a ten-fight winning streak.
