Jared Gordon says his life ‘was about to change’ had he gotten the Paddy Pimblett fight.
Miami, FL — FanSided MMA caught up with Jared Gordon who was in town to support his teammates fighting at Eagle FC 44, Khabib Nurmagomedov’s new MMA promotion.
But it wasn’t the fight all the fans want to hear about. It’s the “almost” fight he got with rising UFC star, Paddy Pimblett. Just a few weeks ago UFC president Dana White let it slip that Gordon would be Pimblett’s next opponent, but no one told Gordon.
“I was laying on my bed and Ariel Helwani texted me ‘Congratulations’, and I was like ‘on what?’ and he said ‘the Paddy Pimblett fight’,” Gordon Told FanSided on Friday night. “We never heard anything and apparently Paddy never heard anything. I believe him, his management said they didn’t hear anything. I don’t know what will happen. Dana White went on Barstool Sports, I think he just saw my name and might’ve pulled the trigger a little early. But, it’s a good buildup for down the line and we can get in there at some point.”
Jared Gordon isn’t bitter about getting passed up for Paddy Pimblett fight
Many fighters might have been bitter after a tease from the boss and then the fight not actually coming to fruition.
“I was like ‘oh my life’s about to change, I’ll be on the main card in London, it’ll be crazy’ but it didn’t happen,” he said. ” I thought it was a great matchup for me but it didn’t happen. I just gotta leave it to God, I was frustrated and upset. But I just gotta leave it in God’s hands and he’ll work it out.”
So with Pimblett matched with Kazula Vargas it leaves Gordon without a fight.
“I would like to fight in March, April. I don’t have an opponent right now. I don’t want to fight anybody later than that,” he said but admitted he wasn’t eyeing anyone in particular. “No, I haven’t thought about it. After the Paddy thing fell through, I went and ate some Pizza. I’ve been training but I haven’t thought about that yet.”
While at Eagle FC it’s easy to place any number of the big-name fighters in attendance fighting there someday, Gordon included.
“I want to retire with the UFC, but if they throw a bunch of money at me then why not?” Gordon said. “I think I can build a name like I’m doing right now in the UFC. If it doesn’t work out there, then I have the brand to go somewhere else.”
