Claressa Shields took the boxing world by storm and now looks to do the same in MMA while also pushing for pay equality.

Claressa Shields has dominated women’s boxing in a way that no other fighter, male or female, has done in the sport. The two-time Olympic gold medalist is also the current WBC, WBO, IBF, and Ring Magazine middleweight champion, WBC, WBA welterweight champion, and former WBC and IBF super-middleweight champion. She is the only two-division undisputed champion in the four-belt era, regardless of gender. Still, her purses simply haven’t matched her accomplishments in the ring.

Shields previously confirmed that the highest purse she had received for a boxing fight was about $350,000. Compared to her male counterparts, Shields has received crumbs for her success in the ring. She has been a strong spokesperson for pay equality in sports and is vocal about the disparity, even citing that it contributed to her decision to transition to MMA.

So how much money has Claressa Shields made?

Shields’ has a net worth currently estimated at roughly five million dollars since her signing to PFL. While that’s nothing to scoff at for the average person, it equates to peanuts in comparison to her male counterparts Tyson Fury ($30 million), Deontay Wilder ($30 million), Anthony Joshua ($60 million), and Canelo Alvarez ($140 million). There is an argument that men’s boxing simply pulls in more viewers and PPV buys. However, this notion is one that Shields believes can change if there’s more investment into promoting women’s fighting more aggressively.

The bulk of Shields’s worth has come from her boxing purses. However, she has made over $200k through other pursuits. She’s had endorsement deals with Audi, Powerade, and Swimsuits for All. Shields also brings in income through paid public appearances, social media sponsorships, and merchandise sales on her website.

As Shields steps into the cage for the first time at PFL 4, it will be interesting to see if her gamble pays off. She wants to become the best female combat athlete in the world. If she can find the same success in MMA that she achieved in boxing, then the super fights (and super fight money) are sure to follow.
