Conor McGregor teases ‘more’ fights on the anniversary of Nate Diaz rematch.

One of the most-requested rubber matches in MMA, let alone just the UFC, that has yet to take place (if it ever does) is a potential trilogy bout between Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz. Now on the anniversary of the pair’s second encounter, McGregor is at it again with his matchmaking teasing.

McGregor took to Instagram to post a photo of him sitting backstage at UFC 202, moments before he and Diaz were to walk out for their highly-anticipated rematch.

Conor McGregor teasing trilogy fight with Nate Diaz yet again

With a buy-rate of 1.65 million, UFC 202 snapped UFC 100’s seven-year run as the most purchased UFC pay-per-view event of all time until UFC 229 came along.

The McGregor-Diaz rivalry began, however, when Diaz made the callout of McGregor in December 2015. Months later, after then-lightweight champ Rafael dos Anjos pulled out of his scheduled UFC 196 fight with McGregor, Diaz stepped in on 11 days’ notice. Even in such short notice, the pre-fight hype and heatedness were off the charts.

McGregor had a strong first round, but he was overwhelmed by pressure from Diaz in the second. And after a failed takedown, Diaz took complete control, eventually locking up a choke and forcing McGregor to submit.

After another heated pre-fight promotion — filled with a one-day McGregor retirement and water bottles being tossed — the rematch at UFC 202 was an all-out, back-and-forth and bloody war, with both men getting their fair share in and rocking the other man. After five grueling rounds, McGregor came out on top via majority decision in the fight UFC considered the greatest in its history.

McGregor would go on to win the lightweight title and earn champ-champ status before pursuing a boxing match with Floyd Mayweather. Meanwhile, UFC 202 marked the last time the younger Diaz brother was seen in the Octagon until UFC 241.
