An up kick ending a UFC contest has only happened twice in the promotion’s entire history. See both up kick knockouts here.

A fighter being grounded on his or her back doesn’t always present the best of circumstances, but there have been times where said fighter lands a devastating up kick on his or her opponent on top, knocking them out and sending the audience into a frenzy with a highlight. This is especially rare in the UFC, as it has only happened twice, with one occurring five months ago at UFC Tampa in October.

As part of that event’s main card, Niko Price took on James Vick in a welterweight clash. Price entered the contest having dropped two of his last three, while Vick was looking for a successful welterweight debut after dropping three straight at lightweight, which saw him quickly go from 13-1 to 13-4.

Price started the bout off strong; however, Vick managed to score a takedown and make Price eat some ground-and-pound. But just when it looked like Price was in trouble, he delivered a perfectly-timed, perfectly-placed right up kick on the button to knock Vick out and get the win and a performance bonus.

Prior to that winning shot by Price, the only other time a UFC fighter won a bout with an up kick came at UFC Fight Night 5 on June 28, 2006.

As part of that event’s non-televised preliminary card, Jon Fitch took on Thiago Alves. Fitch was 14-2 (1 NC) and 2-0 in the UFC at the time, while Alves was 10-4 with a 2-1 UFC record.

Fitch was firmly in control of Alves in the second round of their bout when Alves managed to slip out of Fitch’s grasp, and Alves appeared to attempt to stack Fitch up against the cage wall. But whatever Alves was planning, he didn’t have much time. A couple of seconds later, Fitch blasted Alves with a right up kick similar to Price’s that dropped Alves, allowing Fitch to deliver follow-up shots until the fight was stopped.
