UFC 244: What exactly is the BMF belt?
By Dave Noseworthy
History will be made at UFC 244 when Nate Diaz takes on Jorge Masvidal in a title fight for the Baddest Motherf—-r title.
At a time where interim titles are more prevalent than ever, one would think that the introduction of another “fake” title is not something that would be all that enticing to the fanbase. But the UFC 244 headliner featuring a fight between Nate Diaz and Jorge Masvidal for the Baddest Motherf—-r (BMF) belt is the exception.
When Diaz first called out Masvidal in the post-fight interview at UFC 241, it put a smile on MMA fans faces across the globe. Masvidal was coming off of one of the most shocking knockouts in MMA history, and Diaz had just put on an incredible performance against a top-level talent after a 3 year lay off. The circumstances surrounding the prospect of this fight and the timing of it was just too good to pass up.
Supposedly a one-time thing, the creation of the BMF title went from being a silly joke to the focal point of the biggest event of the year. A title belt that was only accepted by the fanbase because of the history and the character of both Diaz and Masvidal.
Two season veterans who are famous for their aggression and tenacity and not the ones for the disingenuous trash talk to draw attention to themselves for promotional purposes. Fighters with phony personas need not apply, this title is reserved for two of the most naturally polarizing figures in the game.
Overall the BMF title belt isn’t being met with as much criticism as many would have expected. Fans are willing to put the hierarchy of contenders and champions aside for one night to enjoy a contest against two fighters who’ve earned an unparalleled level of respect. This is a one-time special circumstance that both men have earned.
In an era of the sport where pro wrestling antics are being shoved down our throats, two of the most genuine individuals in the game are the center of attention and preparing to perform on the biggest stage and under the brightest lights possible. The BMF belt is a championship title that will only be crowned on one night, the winner of this fight goes into the history books as the Baddest Motherf—-r in the sport.
