UFC 141: Donald Cerrone vs. Nate Diaz

Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone and Nate Diaz are two all time fan favorite fighters. They’re both guys that fans like to associate themselves with and get behind. Diaz for his attitude and style of fighting and “Cowboy” for his never back down and adventurous mind set. These are two guys who most MMA fans would have loved to have seen become friends at one point in time, but instead the two turned into bitter rivals.

Diaz had just moved back down to lightweight after a short stint up at welterweight. He returned to the division with an impressive win over Takanori Gomi, but now he would face off against one of the divisions top contenders, who was riding a six fight winning streak in Cerrone. Cerrone did his best in the lead up to the fight to be his professional self, but Diaz made it difficult. He never showed Cerrone the respect he was looking for and tensions came to a head when the two faced off on media day. Diaz slapped the “Cowboy” hat off of the top of Cerrone’s head and pushing him, which flipped a switch in Cerrone, and showed us a different side to him.

Come weigh-in day, Diaz famously missed weight after pulling off his antics at media day. He missed by only one pound, but Cerrone immediately made sure to let all the brass on stage know that he himself did not care what Diaz weighed, he just wanted to fight. The UFC obliged as they do in most instances and the two had one of the most intense face offs we have seen to date. Diaz marched right up to the face of Cerrone, who did not even care to force him to lose the last pound. The two came together both, simmering and talking trash to each other. Two fan favorites were getting ready to stand toe to toe and go to war, but the day before the action fans got to really see just how much animosity there was between the two.
